Proper-motion binaries in the Hipparcos catalogue. Comparison with radial velocity data Context: .This paper is the last in a series devoted to the analysis ofthe binary content of the Hipparcos Catalogue. Aims: .Thecomparison of the proper motions constructed from positions spanning ashort (Hipparcos) or long time (Tycho-2) makes it possible to uncoverbinaries with periods of the order of or somewhat larger than the shorttime span (in this case, the 3 yr duration of the Hipparcos mission),since the unrecognised orbital motion will then add to the propermotion. Methods: .A list of candidate proper motion binaries isconstructed from a carefully designed χ2 test evaluatingthe statistical significance of the difference between the Tycho-2 andHipparcos proper motions for 103 134 stars in common between the twocatalogues (excluding components of visual systems). Since similar listsof proper-motion binaries have already been constructed, the presentpaper focuses on the evaluation of the detection efficiency ofproper-motion binaries, using different kinds of control data (mostlyradial velocities). The detection rate for entries from the NinthCatalogue of Spectroscopic Binary Orbits (S_B^9) is evaluated, as wellas for stars like barium stars, which are known to be all binaries, andfinally for spectroscopic binaries identified from radial velocity datain the Geneva-Copenhagen survey of F and G dwarfs in the solarneighbourhood. Results: .Proper motion binaries are efficientlydetected for systems with parallaxes in excess of ~20 mas, and periodsin the range 1000-30 000 d. The shortest periods in this range(1000-2000 d, i.e., once to twice the duration of the Hipparcos mission)may appear only as DMSA/G binaries (accelerated proper motion in theHipparcos Double and Multiple System Annex). Proper motion binariesdetected among S_B9 systems having periods shorter than about400 d hint at triple systems, the proper-motion binary involving acomponent with a longer orbital period. A list of 19 candidate triplesystems is provided. Binaries suspected of having low-mass(brown-dwarf-like) companions are listed as well. Among the 37 bariumstars with parallaxes larger than 5 mas, only 7 exhibit no evidence forduplicity whatsoever (be it spectroscopic or astrometric). | Binary Life after the AGB -- Towards a Unified Picture We attempt to construct a unified evolutionary scheme that includespost-AGB systems, barium stars, symbiotics and related systems,explaining their similarities as well as their differences. Specialattention is given to the comparison of the barium pollution andsymbiotic phenomena. Finally, we outline a `transient torus'evolutionary scenario that makes use of the various observational andtheoretical hints and aims at explaining the observed characteristics ofthe relevant systems.
| Kinematics of chromospherically active binaries and evidence of an orbital period decrease in binary evolution The kinematics of 237 chromospherically active binaries (CABs) werestudied. The sample is heterogeneous with different orbits andphysically different components from F to M spectral-type main-sequencestars to G and K giants and supergiants. The computed U, V, W spacevelocities indicate that the sample is also heterogeneous in velocityspace. That is, both kinematically younger and older systems exist amongthe non-evolved main sequence and the evolved binaries containing giantsand subgiants. The kinematically young (0.95 Gyr) subsample (N= 95),which is formed according to the kinematical criteria of moving groups,was compared with the rest (N= 142) of the sample (3.86 Gyr) toinvestigate any observational clues of binary evolution. Comparing theorbital period histograms between the younger and older subsamples,evidence was found supporting the finding of Demircan that the CABs losemass (and angular momentum) and evolve towards shorter orbital periods.The evidence of mass loss is noticeable on the histograms of the totalmass (Mh+Mc), which is compared between theyounger (only N= 53 systems available) and older subsamples (only N= 66systems available). The orbital period decrease during binary evolutionis found to be clearly indicated by the kinematical ages of 6.69, 5.19and 3.02 Gyr which were found in the subsamples according to the periodranges of logP<= 0.8, 0.8 < logP<= 1.7 and 1.7 < logP<=3, respectively, among the binaries in the older subsample.
| An Archive of IUE Low-Dispersion Spectra of the White Dwarf Stars We have produced an archive of the ultraviolet low-dispersion spectrafor the full set of white dwarf stars observed with the InternationalUltraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite over the course of its 18 yrmission. This archive contains the spectra of 322 individual degeneratestars which have been processed to optimize the signal-to-noise for eachstar. In particular, all spectra have been corrected for residualtemporal and thermal effects and placed on the Hubble Space TelescopeFaint Object Spectrograph absolute flux scale using procedures describedby Massa & Fitzpatrick. Wherever possible, multiple observations ofindividual stars have been co-added to further enhance signal-to-noiseand have been combined into a single spectrum including the full 1150 to3150 Å wavelength region observed by IUE. The contents of thisspectral archive are described and the details of data reductionprocedures are provided, along with the url for access to the electronicfiles of the processed spectra.
| New periodic variables from the Hipparcos epoch photometry Two selection statistics are used to extract new candidate periodicvariables from the epoch photometry of the Hipparcos catalogue. Theprimary selection criterion is a signal-to-noise ratio. The dependenceof this statistic on the number of observations is calibrated usingabout 30000 randomly permuted Hipparcos data sets. A significance levelof 0.1 per cent is used to extract a first batch of candidate variables.The second criterion requires that the optimal frequency be unaffectedif the data are de-trended by low-order polynomials. We find 2675 newcandidate periodic variables, of which the majority (2082) are from theHipparcos`unsolved' variables. Potential problems with theinterpretation of the data (e.g. aliasing) are discussed.
| The tidal effects on the lithium abundance of binary systems with giant component We analyse the behavior of lithium abundance as a function of effectivetemperature, projected rotational velocity, orbital period andeccentricity for a sample of 68 binary systems with giant component andorbital period ranging from about 10 to 6400 days. For these binarysystems the Li abundances show a gradual decrease with temperature,paralleling the well established result for single giants. We have alsoobserved a dependence of lithium content on rotation. Binary systemswith moderate to high rotation present also moderate to high Li content.This study shows also that synchronized binary systems with giantcomponent seem to retain more of their original lithium than theunsynchronized systems. For orbital periods lower than 100 to 250 days,typically the period of synchronization for this kind of binary systems,lithium depleted stars seems to be unusual. The suggestion is made thatthere is an ``inhibited zone" in which synchronized binary systems withgiant component having lithium abundance lower than a threshold levelshould be unusual. | Barium Stars and Tc-Poor S Stars: Binary Masqueraders within the Carbon-Star Family Not Available
| On X-Ray Variability in Active Binary Stars We have compared the X-ray emissions of active binary stars observed atvarious epochs by the Einstein and ROSAT satellites in order toinvestigate the nature of their X-ray variability. The primary aim ofthis work is to determine whether or not active binaries exhibitlong-term variations in X-ray emission, perhaps analogous to theobserved cyclic behavior of solar magnetic activity. We find that, whilethe mean level of emission of the sample remains steady, comparison ofdifferent ROSAT observations of the same stars shows significantvariation on timescales <~2 yr, with an ``effective variability''ΔI/I=0.32+/-0.04, where I and ΔI represent the mean emissionand variation from the mean emission, respectively. A comparison of theROSAT All-Sky Survey and later pointed observations with earlierobservations of the same stars carried out with Einstein yields onlymarginal evidence for a larger variation (ΔI/I=0.38+/-0.04 forEinstein vs. ROSAT All-Sky Survey and 0.46+/-0.05 for Einstein vs. ROSATpointed) at these longer timescales (~10 yr), thus indicating thepossible presence of a long-term component to the variability. Whetheror not this long-term component is due to the presence of cyclicvariability cannot be decided on the basis of existing data. However,assuming that this component is analogous to the observed cyclicvariability of the Sun, we find that the relative magnitude of thecyclic component in the ROSAT passband can, at most, be a factor of 4,i.e., I_cyc/I_min<4. This is to be compared with the correspondingbut significantly higher solar value of ~10-10^2 derived from GOES,Yohkoh, and Solrad data. These results are consistent with thesuggestions of earlier studies that a turbulent or distributive dynamomight be responsible for the observed magnetic activity on the mostactive, rapidly rotating stars.
| Radio star catalogue observed in San Juan (RSSJ95) Using the data observed in San Juan with the photoelectric AstrolabeMark II of the Beijing Astronomical Observatory from February, 1992 toMarch, 1997, the radio star catalogue in San Juan(RSSJ95) has beencompiled. There are 69 radio stars in this catalogue. The positions ofthe radio stars are for the epoch of observation and the equinox J2000.0and a system close to that of the system FK5. The mean precisions are+/-2.2 ms and +/-0.035'' in right ascensions and declinations,respectively. The magnitudes of stars are from 0.9 to 10.7. Thedeclinations are from -2fdg 5 to -60(deg) . The mean epoch is 1995.1.Finally, the comparison results between the Hipparcos catalogue andRSSJ95 are given.
| A Catalog of Spectroscopically Identified White Dwarfs A catalog of 2249 white dwarfs which have been identifiedspectroscopically is presented complete through 1996 April. Thiscompilation is the fourth edition of the Villanova Catalog ofSpectroscopically Identified White Dwarfs. For each degenerate star, thefollowing data entries with references are provided: (1) a catalogcoordinate designation or WD number, in order of right ascension; (2)the right ascension and declination for epoch 1950.0; (3) the spectraltype based upon the new system; (4) a catalog symbol denoting binarymembership; (5) a list of most names known to exist for a given star;(6) proper motion and position angle; (7) broadband UBV photometry, V,B-V, U-B (8) multichannel spectrophotometry, v(MC), g-r (9)Strömgren narrowband photometry, y, b-y, u-b (10) an absolutevisual magnitude based upon the best available color-magnitudecalibration or trigonometric parallax; (11) the observed radial velocityuncorrected for gravitational redshift or solar motion; and (12) thetrigonometric parallax with mean error when available. Notes for unusualor peculiar stars and a coded Reference Key alphabetized by the firstauthor's last name are presented, as well as an expanded tablecross-referencing all names to the catalog WD number. An introductionand full descriptions of the entries are provided in the text.
| AGB stars in binaries and their progeny An AGB star in a binary system is likely to pollute its companion withcarbon- and s-process-rich matter. After the AGB star has faded into anunconspicuous white dwarf, the polluted companion enters the zoo ofstars with chemical peculiarities. In this paper, the progeny of AGBstars in binary systems are identified among existing spectroscopicclasses (Abell 35-like, binary post-AGB, WIRRing, dwarf Ba and C,subgiant CH, Ba, CH, S, yellow symbiotics) and their filiation isdiscussed from the properties of their eccentricity -- period diagrams.
| The age-mass relation for chromospherically active binaries. III. Lithium depletion in giant components We present a study of the lithium abundances of a sample of evolvedcomponents of Chromospherically Active Binary Systems. We show that asignificant part of them have lithium excesses, independently of theirmass and evolutionary stage. Therefore, it can be concluded that Liabundance does not depend on age for giant components of CABS. Theseoverabundances appear to be closely related to the stellar rotation, andwe interpret them as a consequence of the transfer of angular momentumfrom the orbit to the rotation as the stars evolve in and off the MainSequence, in a similar way as it happens in the dwarf components of thesame systems and in the Tidally Locked Binaries belonging to the Hyadesand M67. | Insights into the formation of barium and Tc-poor S stars from an extended sample of orbital elements The set of orbital elements available for chemically-peculiar red giant(PRG) stars has been considerably enlarged thanks to a decade-longCORAVEL radial-velocity monitoring of about 70 barium stars and 50 Sstars. When account is made for the detection biases, the observedbinary frequency among strong barium stars, mild barium stars andTc-poor S stars (respectively 35/37, 34/40 and 24/28) is compatible withthe hypothesis that they are all members of binary systems. Thesimilarity between the orbital-period, eccentricity and mass-functiondistributions of Tc-poor S stars and barium stars confirms that Tc-poorS stars are the cooler analogs of barium stars. A comparative analysisof the orbital elements of the various families of PRG stars, and of asample of chemically-normal, binary giants in open clusters, revealsseveral interesting features. The eccentricity - period diagram of PRGstars clearly bears the signature of dissipative processes associatedwith mass transfer, since the maximum eccentricity observed at a givenorbital period is much smaller than in the comparison sample of normalgiants. be held The mass function distribution is compatible with theunseen companion being a white dwarf (WD). This lends support to thescenario of formation of the PRG star by accretion of heavy-element-richmatter transferred from the former asymptotic giant branch progenitor ofthe current WD. Assuming that the WD companion has a mass in the range0.60+/-0.04 Msb ȯ, the masses of mild and strong barium starsamount to 1.9+/-0.2 and 1.5+/-0.2 Msb ȯ, respectively. Mild bariumstars are not restricted to long-period systems, contrarily to what isexpected if the smaller accretion efficiency in wider systems were thedominant factor controlling the pollution level of the PRG star. Theseresults suggest that the difference between mild and strong barium starsis mainly one of galactic population rather than of orbital separation,in agreement with their respective kinematical properties. There areindications that metallicity may be the parameter blurring the period -Ba-anomaly correlation: at a given orbital period, increasing levels ofheavy-element overabundances are found in mild barium stars, strongbarium stars, and Pop.II CH stars, corresponding to a sequence ofincreasingly older, i.e., more metal-deficient, populations. PRG starsthus seem to be produced more efficiently in low-metallicitypopulations. Conversely, normal giants in barium-like binary systems mayexist in more metal-rich populations. HD 160538 (DR Dra) may be such anexample, and its very existence indicates at least that binarity is nota sufficient condition to produce a PRG star. | San Juan radio star catalogue and comparison with HIPPARCOS catalogue. Not Available
| Barium stars, galactic populations and evolution. In this paper HIPPARCOS astrometric and kinematical data together withradial velocities from other sources are used to calibrate bothluminosity and kinematics parameters of Ba stars and to classify them.We confirm the results of our previous paper (where we used data fromthe HIPPARCOS Input Catalogue), and show that Ba stars are aninhomogeneous group. Five distinct classes have been found i.e. somehalo stars and four groups belonging to disk population: roughlysuper-giants, two groups of giants (one on the giant branch, the otherat the clump location) and dwarfs, with a few subgiants mixed with them.The confirmed or suspected duplicity, the variability and the range ofknown orbital periods found in each group give coherent resultssupporting the scenario for Ba stars that are not too highly massivebinary stars in any evolutionary stages but that all were previouslyenriched with Ba from a more evolved companion. The presence in thesample of a certain number of ``false'' Ba stars is confirmed. Theestimates of age and mass are compatible with models for stars with astrong Ba anomaly. The mild Ba stars with an estimated mass higher than3Msun_ may be either stars Ba enriched by themselves or``true'' Ba stars, which imposes new constraints on models.
| Rotational Velocities of Late-Type Stars A calibration based on the results of Gray has been used to determineprojected rotational velocities for 133 bright stars with spectral typesof F, G, or K, most of which appear in {\it The Bright Star Catalogue}.The vast majority have {\it v} sin {\it i} $\leq$ 10 km s$^{-1}$ and,thus, are slow rotators. With the new calibration, projected rotationalvelocities have been determined for a sample of 111 late-type stars,most of which are chromospherically active. Some of the stars have hadtheir rotational velocities measured for the first time. (SECTION:Stars)
| The ROSAT All-Sky Survey of Active Binary Coronae. III. Quiescent Coronal Properties for the BY Draconis--Type Binaries We present X-ray observations of 35 active late-type BY Draconis dwarfbinary systems and 28 evolved binary systems, similar in nature to theRS Canum Venaticorum systems, obtained with the Position SensitiveProportional Counter (PSPC) during the ROSAT All-Sky Survey phase of themission. Of this sample, 52 targets were detected in exposures ofroughly 600 s or less. When these new data are combined with the earlierresults from Dempsey et al. (1993b), this survey represents the largestsample of active binary systems observed to date at any wavelength,including X-rays. We expand our investigation of how coronal properties(e.g., surface flux, luminosity, etc.) correlate with stellar parameters(e.g., rotation period, color, etc.) and confirm the conclusions ofDempsey et al. (1993b). Rotation period provides the best correlationwith X-ray surface flux with F_{{X}}~P^{-0.59+/-0.10}_{{rot}} for theentire sample. We find no evidence for a "basal" or nonmagnetic X-rayflux component. We model the low-resolution pulse-height spectra for 12systems with two-temperature thermal plasmas. The derived temperaturesfor the BY Dra systems are identical to those previously derived foractive evolved giants and subgiants in close binaries (Dempsey et al.1993c). We also show that the dependence of temperature and emissionmeasures on rotation period is the same for the dwarf, subgiant, andgiant binaries.
| Absolute magnitudes and kinematics of barium stars. The absolute magnitude of barium stars has been obtained fromkinematical data using a new algorithm based on the maximum-likelihoodprinciple. The method allows to separate a sample into groupscharacterized by different mean absolute magnitudes, kinematics andz-scale heights. It also takes into account, simultaneously, thecensorship in the sample and the errors on the observables. The methodhas been applied to a sample of 318 barium stars. Four groups have beendetected. Three of them show a kinematical behaviour corresponding todisk population stars. The fourth group contains stars with halokinematics. The luminosities of the disk population groups spread alarge range. The intrinsically brightest one (M_v_=-1.5mag,σ_M_=0.5mag) seems to be an inhomogeneous group containing bariumbinaries as well as AGB single stars. The most numerous group (about 150stars) has a mean absolute magnitude corresponding to stars in the redgiant branch (M_v_=0.9mag, σ_M_=0.8mag). The third group containsbarium dwarfs, the obtained mean absolute magnitude is characteristic ofstars on the main sequence or on the subgiant branch (M_v_=3.3mag,σ_M_=0.5mag). The obtained mean luminosities as well as thekinematical results are compatible with an evolutionary link betweenbarium dwarfs and classical barium giants. The highly luminous group isnot linked with these last two groups. More high-resolutionspectroscopic data will be necessary in order to better discriminatebetween barium and non-barium stars.
| Wind accretion in binary stars - II. Accretion rates Smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) is used to estimate accretionrates of mass, linear and angular momentum in a binary system where onecomponent undergoes mass loss through a wind. Physical parameters arechosen such as to model the alleged binary precursors of barium stars,whose chemical peculiarities are believed to result from the accretionof the wind from a companion that was formerly on the asymptotic giantbranch (AGB). The binary system modelled consists of a 3-M_ AGB star(losing mass at a rate 10^-6 M_ yr^-1) and a 1.5-M_ star on the mainsequence, in a 3-au circular orbit. Three-dimensional simulations areperformed for gases with polytropic indices gamma=1, 1.1 and 1.5, tobracket more realistic situations that would include radiative cooling.Mass accretion rates are found to depend on resolution, and we estimatetypical values of 1-2 per cent for the gamma=1.5 case and 8 per cent forthe other models. The highest resolution obtained (with 400000particles) corresponds to an accretor of linear size ~=16 R_. Despitebeing (in the gamma=1.5 case) about 10 times smaller than theoreticalestimates based on the Bondi-Hoyle prescription, the SPH accretion ratesremain large enough to explain the pollution of barium stars.Uncertainties in the current SPH rates remain, however, owing to thesimplified treatment of the wind acceleration mechanism, as well as tothe absence of any cooling prescription and to the limited numericalresolution. Angular momentum transfer leads to significant spin-up ofthe accretor and can account for the rapid rotation of HD 165141, abarium star with a young white dwarf companion and a rotation rateunusually large among K giants. In the circular orbit modelled in thispaper, hydrodynamic thrust and gravitational drag almost exactlycompensate and so the net transfer of linear momentum is nearly zero.For small but finite eccentricities and the chosen set of parameters,the eccentricity tends to decrease.
| New X-ray sources detected among mild barium and S stars. We report on the detection by ROSAT of X-rays from the mild barium starHD 165141 (K0III/IIBa1) and from the S stars HD 35155 (S4,1) and HR 363(S3/2). For the S stars, the X-ray flux is attributed to the accretionof the red-giant wind by the white dwarf companion. The strongvariability observed in the X- and UV fluxes on time scales of bothhours and months may be due to irregularities in the accretion rate, orto variable obscuration by cool gas present in the system. In the caseof HD 35155, the absence of ROSAT detection at the phase where eclipsesare observed in the UV and optical domains suggests that part of theX-ray variability may be associated with eclipses of the compactcompanion. HD 165141 is more puzzling since this star seems to share theproperties of RS CVn and barium systems. The properties of the X-raysemitted by this system are typical of RS CVn systems, as is thephotometric period of 35d and the rapid rotation. However, the rapidrotation does not seem to be due to synchronism with the orbital period,as is usually the case for RS CVn systems. The companion appears to be ahot white dwarf rather than a main sequence star, with a long orbitalperiod (~5200d), more typical of barium than of RS CVn systems. Theseconflicting properties could be explained if this particular barium starformed on the giant branch, accreting not only mass but also spinangular momentum. The two giants HR 5692 (G8IIIBa0.3) and HR 6468(G8IIIBa0.6) appear to be coronal X-ray sources. The barium nature ofthese stars is questioned, given their small Ba indices and their normalDDO photometric indices. Moreover, since HR 6468 is a radial-velocitystandard star, it is likely not a binary star as required for bariumstars.

| Are the Rotational Axes Perpendicular to the Orbital Planes in the Binary Systems. I. Asynchronous Long-Period RS CVn Stars We show that only 12 out of 27 analyzed binaries have data good enoughfor reliable determination of iorb and irot. In 4systems (out of these 12) assumption about coplanarity of rotationalequatorial plane and orbital plane is justified. In the remaining casesrotational axes are not perpendicular to the orbital planes(non-coplanar case). The commonly accepted assumption about thecoplanarity of rotational and orbital planes should be revised.
| The active dynamo stars: RS CVn, BY Dra, FK Com, Algol, W UMa, and T Tau Not Available
| Chromospherically active stars. 11: Giant with compact hot companions and the barium star scenario We have determined spectroscopic orbits for three chromsophericallyactive giants that have hot compact companions. They are HD 160538 (KOIII + wd, P = 904 days), HD 165141 (G8 III + wd, P approximately 5200days), and HD 185510 (KO III + sdB, P = 20.6619 days). By fitting an IUEspectrum with theoretical models, we find the white dwarf companion ofHD 165141 has a temperature of about 35,000 K. Spectral types androtational velocities have been determined for the three giants anddistances have been estimated. These three systems and 39 Ceti arecompared with the barium star mass-transfer scenario. The long-periodmild barium giant HD 165141 as well as HD 185510 and 39 Ceti, which haverelatively short periods and normal abundance giants, appear to beconsistent with this scenario. The last binary, HD 160538, a system withapparently near solar abundances, a white dwarf companion, and orbitalcharacteristics similar to many barium stars, demonstrates that theexistence of a white dwarf companion is insufficient to produce a bariumstar. The paucity of systems with confirmed white dwarf companions makesabundance analyses of HD 160538 and HD 165141 of great value inexamining the role of metallicity in barium star formation.
| A catalog of chromospherically active binary stars (second edition) The catalog contains 206 spectroscopic binary systems with at least onelate-type component that shows Ca II H and K emission in its spectrum.These systems include the classical RS CVn binaries and BY Dra binaries.The catalog summarizes information on the photometric, spectroscopic,orbital, and physical properties of the systems as well as space motionsand positions. Up to 42 'parameters' for each stellar system are listedfollowed by the appropriate reference to direct interested colleagues tothe original papers. A comprehensive selection of further informationfor each star is given in the individual notes. In addition, the catalogcontains a candidate list of 138 stars that have similar characteristicsbut are not definitely known binaries or have not had Ca II H and Kemission observed.

| Lithium abundance and activity for 57 RS CVn systems The high resolution (0.049-0.145Å) and high signal-to-noise ratio(100-600) Reticon and CCD spectra of 57 binaries of the RS CVn type wereobtained with the coudé spectrograph of the McDonald Observatory2.1m telescope and the Yunnan Observatory 1m telescope for an analysisof the correlation between Li abundance and chromospheric activity. TheLi abundance of 57 RS CVn systems, which include 76 detected components,has been determined through the observed equivalent widths of the Lidoublet (6707.761Å + 6707.912Å) and Kurucz's modelatmospheres. By the method of the comprehensive analysis of theatmospheric model the abundances of [Fe/H], [Ti/Fe] and logN(Li) havebeen calculated for 10 of the above mentioned binaries. We have madestatistical analysis of the correlations between the lithium abundanceand the effective temperature Teff as well as the projectedrotational velocity, v sin i. The results show that the Li abundancetends to decrease with the drop of Teff. On the other hand,the Li abundance has a tendency to decrease with the increase of v sini, but the dispersion of this correlation is very large. In particular,in the range of v sin i < 25km/sec we may say that no correlationexists at all. Besides, a statistical analysis shows that there is noevident relation between the Li abundance of 57 binaries of the RS CVntype and the level of activity. However, it is worthwhile to note thatthe Li abundances of the cold components in 7 binary systems during theperiod of strong activity are lower than those of the less active hotcomponents. The opposite case has never been found.
| Lithium abundance and activity for 57 RS CVn systems The correlation between Li abundance and chromospheric activity isanalyzed in high-resolution, high SNR spectra of 57 RS CVn typebinaries. Lithium abundances of 87 RS CVn components for 57 RS CVnsystems is obviously reduced with decreasing gradual reduction inT(eff). Li abundance shows statistically declining trends in RS CVnstars with increasing rotational velocities. Most of the RS CVn systemsare unlikely to be metal-poor stars. The Li abundance in the RS CVnstars appears to have no obvious correlation with chromosphericactivity.
| Kinematics and age of RS Canum Venaticorum and by Draconis stars Space velocities of 146 chromospherically active binary stars have beencalculated. Containing F-M spectral types on the main sequence togetherwith G and K giants and subgiants, this very heterogeneous sample hasbeen divided into groups in order to segregate stars which have similarkinematics and ages. After many trials for different criteria, thesample was divided into five groups - two groups for giants, two groupsfor main-sequence systems, and one group for main-sequence systems.Kinematics of subgiants implies a stellar age of about 2-3 Gyr. Youngand old groups of giants and main-sequence systems could becharacterized by a kinematical age of about 1 Gyr and more than 5 Gyr,respectively. These ages are estimated approximately according to spacevelocity distributions and dispersions in velocity space in each group.Inferred ages for the groups above agrees with circulation, rotationactivity relation, and stellar evolution theories.
| Lithium in RS CVn binaries and related chromospherically active stars. I - Observational results The present survey of the Li I 6708 A line in a sample of spectral typeG and K stars with luminosity classes III, IV, and V shows that manyK-type stars in the sample, including a large number of RS CVn binaries,show an anomalously high Li abundance relative to typical inactive starsof the same spectral type. Only a few stars in the sample are likely tobe premain sequence objects of stars which have recently arrived on themain sequence. Mechanisms that could lead to the enhanced Li absorptionin chromospherically active stars are discussed; these encompass largecool spots on the stellar surface, the production of Li in stellarflares by spallation reactions, and the evolution from main-sequenceprogenitors without, or with very shallow, outer convective zones.
