ARIES imaging polarimeter. An Imaging Polarimeter has been fabricated for use with liquid- N2cooled CCD camera and is designed to suit 104-cm Sampurnanand telescopewith an f/13 focus at Aryabhatta Research Institute of ObservationalSciences (ARIES), Naini Tal. The instrument measures the linearpolarisation in broad B, V and R band and has a field of view ~ 20' x20'. We are presenting here some observations regarding the polarisationof some polarised as well as unpolarised stars with a view to show theperformance of our polarimeter.
| A Galactic O Star Catalog We have produced a catalog of 378 Galactic O stars with accuratespectral classifications that is complete for V<8 but includes manyfainter stars. The catalog provides cross-identifications with othersources; coordinates (obtained in most cases from Tycho-2 data);astrometric distances for 24 of the nearest stars; optical (Tycho-2,Johnson, and Strömgren) and NIR photometry; group membership,runaway character, and multiplicity information; and a Web-based versionwith links to on-line services.
| On the Absolute Magnitudes of the O Stars The conclusion published in 1992 by Garmany & Stencel from a studyof northern OB associations, that the absolute magnitudes of the O starsshow ``a large scatter ... intrinsic to the classification system,'' iscritically examined. It is found that the differences between theirderived absolute magnitudes of O stars and this author's 1973calibration exhibit large systematic effects in several associations,ranging from -0.74 to +1.02 mag with substantially smaller dispersions.Of course, when these results are combined, the scatter equals the fullrange of the systematic effects. To investigate the possibility ofdistance errors, the Garmany & Stencel B0-B2.5 stars in the sameassociations are subjected to the same analysis. The results for the Bstars show no significant systematic differences, eliminating errors inthe association distances derived by Garmany & Stencel from the Bstars as the source of the differences found for the O stars. It isnoteworthy that the dispersions in the absolute magnitudes of the Bstars within a given association are similar to or larger than those ofthe O stars. An examination of the distribution on the sky of the starsshows that the O and B stars in the discrepant associations aregenerally not colocated; such was already known to be the case for theimportant Perseus OB1 association. It is suggested that despite theirefforts to improve them, significant problems remain with theassociation memberships adopted by Garmany & Stencel; the relativelysmall dispersions of the O star absolute magnitudes even in thediscrepant cases indicate that they belong to different, usually moredistant associations near the lines of sight to the B associations withwhich they have been mistakenly connected. Several individual cases ofunrecognized multiple systems and classification errors are also foundin the Garmany & Stencel sample. It is concluded that the scatter inthe absolute magnitudes of the O stars is not as large as found byGarmany & Stencel, and not larger than that of the B stars.
| A Search for Interstellar Bubbles surrounding Massive Stars in Perseus OB1 We have examined the interstellar medium in the vicinity of massivestars belonging to the Per OB1 association based on neutral hydrogen 21cm observations obtained with the 100 m radio telescope at Effelsberg(HPBW=8.4′) and complementary data from the Leiden-Dwingeloo H ISurvey (HPBW=36'). The higher angular resolution H I observationsallowed us to discover probable wind-blown bubbles related to fourmassive stars in the association, namely, HD 14442 [O5n(f)p], HD 14947[O5If+], HD 13022 [O9.5II-III((n))], and HD 13338 [O9.5V], while thedetection of a wind-blown bubble associated with HD 16691 [O5If+] isless conclusive. A clear H I shell coincident in position with two B1IIIstars (HD 15233 and Hilt 311) was also detected. Some of these featuresalso have infrared and/or molecular counterparts. The energetics of thestructures related to each massive star is analyzed. The new H Iinterstellar bubbles appear to be similar to the ones found surroundingWolf-Rayet stars and other Of stars. The large-scale maps obtained usingthe lower angular resolution H I data show that most of the early-typestars belonging to Per OB1 are placed in a region of low H I emission.The association could have blown a H I shell of about 350×550 pcin size. This large H I shell has an infrared counterpart.
| UBV beta Database for Case-Hamburg Northern and Southern Luminous Stars A database of photoelectric UBV beta photometry for stars listed in theCase-Hamburg northern and southern Milky Way luminous stars surveys hasbeen compiled from the original research literature. Consisting of over16,000 observations of some 7300 stars from over 500 sources, thisdatabase constitutes the most complete compilation of such photometryavailable for intrinsically luminous stars around the Galactic plane.Over 5000 stars listed in the Case-Hamburg surveys still lackfundamental photometric data.
| Cross-correlation characteristics of OB stars from IUE spectroscopy We present a catalogue of homogeneous measures of the linewidthparameter, v_esin i, for 373 O-type stars and early B supergiants(including the separate components of 25 binary and three triplesystems), produced by cross-correlating high-resolution,short-wavelength IUE spectra against a `template' spectrum of tauSco. Wealso tabulate terminal velocities. There are no O supergiants in oursample with v_esin i<65 km s^-1, and only one supergiant earlier thanB5 has v_esin i<50 km s^-1, confirming that an important linebroadening mechanism in addition to rotation must be present in theseobjects. A calibration of the area under the cross-correlation peakagainst spectral type is used to obtain estimates of continuum intensityratios of the components in 28 spectroscopically binary or multiplesystems. At least seven SB2 systems show evidence for the `Struve-Sahadeeffect', a systematic variation in relative line strength as a functionof orbital phase. The stellar wind profiles of the most rapid rotator inour sample, the O9III:n* star HD 191423 (v_esin i=436km s^-1), show itto have a `wind-compressed disc' similar to that of HD 93521; this starand other rapid rotators are good candidates for studies of non-radialpulsation.

| Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue. We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star,when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.
| An IUE survey of interstellar H I LY alpha absorption. 1: Column densities We measure Galactic interstellar neutral hydrogen column densities byanalyzing archival interstellar Ly alpha absorption line data toward 554B2 and hotter stars observed at high resolution with the IUE satellite.This study more than doubles the number of lines of sight with measuresof N(H I) based on Ly alpha. We have included the scattered lightbackground correction algorithm of Bianchi and Bohlin in our datareduction. We use the correlation between the Balmer discontinuity(c1) index and the stellar Ly alpha absorption in order toassess the effects of stellar Ly alpha contamination. Approximately 40%of the B stars with measured (c1) index, exhibit seriousstellar Ly alpha contamination. One table contains the derived values ofthe interstellar N(H I) for 393 stars with at most small amounts ofstellar contamination. Another lists the observed values of total N(H I)for 161 stars with suspected stellar Ly alpha contamination and/oruncertain stellar parameters.

| Galactic OB associations in the northern Milky Way Galaxy. I - Longitudes 55 deg to 150 deg The literature on all OB associations was reviewed, and their IRAS pointsource content was studied, between galactic longitude 55 and 150 deg.Only one third of the 24 associations listed by Ruprecht et al. (1981)have been the subject of individual studies designed to identify thebrightest stars. Distances to all of these were recomputed using themethod of cluster fitting of the B main sequence stars, which makes itpoossible to reexamine the absolute magnitude calibration of the Ostars, as well as for the red supergiant candidate stars. Also examinedwas the composite HR diagram for these associations. Associations withthe best defined main sequences, which also tend to contain very youngclusters, referred to here as OB clusters, have extremely few evolved Band A or red supergiants. Associations with poorly defined mainsequences and few OB clusters have many more evolved stars. They alsoshow an effect in the upper HR diagram referred to as a ledge byFitzpatrick and Garmany (1990) in similar data for the Large MagellanicCloud. It is suggested that the differences in the associations are notjust observational selection effects but represent real differences inage and formation history.
| Extinction law survey based on UV ANS photometry The paper presents an extensive survey of interstellar extinction curvesderived from the ANS photometric measurements of early type starsbelonging to our Galaxy. This survey is more extensive and deeper thanany other one, based on spectral data. The UV color excesses aredetermined with the aid of 'artificial standards', a new techniqueproposed by the authors which allows the special check of Sp/L match ofa target and the selected standard. The results indicate that extinctionlaw changes from place to place.
| Variability and theoretical upper limit of the mass loss rate in OB-stars Solutions of the stellar wind equations for 70 O-type and 19 B-typeindividual stars are presented. The calculated mass loss rates M,terminal velocities v(infinity) and line profiles are compared with theobserved ones. It is shown that a theoretical upper limit of the massloss rate exists. Wind variability in connection with this critical massloss rate is discussed.
| Mass loss of early-type stars - A comparison of theory with observational data A comparison of theoretical calculations of stellar wind dynamics withobservational data for 62 stars is carried out. A conclusion about thenonstationary regulation mechanisms of the mass loss rate is made on thebasis of obtained solutions.

| Terminal velocities for a large sample of O stars, B supergiants, and Wolf-Rayet stars It is argued that easily measured, reliable estimates of terminalvelocities for early-type stars are provided by the central velocityasymptotically approached by narrow absorption features and by theviolet limit of zero residual intensity in saturated P Cygni profiles.These estimators are used to determine terminal velocities, v(infinity),for 181 O stars, 70 early B supergiants, and 35 Wolf-Rayet stars. For OBstars, the values are typically 15-20 percent smaller than the extremeviolet edge velocities, v(edge), while for WR stars v(infinity) = 0.76v(edge) on average. New mass-loss rates for WR stars which are thermalradio emitters are given, taking into account the new terminalvelocities and recent revisions to estimates of distances and to themean nuclear mass per electron. The relationships between v(infinity),the surface escape velocities, and effective temperatures are examined.
| Terminal velocities of the winds from rapidly rotating OB stars This paper presents measurements of terminal velocities of OB starswhich are rapid rotators, based on archival high-dispersion IUE spectraof the C IV resonance doublet. The terminal velocities of the mostrapidly rotating stars appear to be systematically lower than those ofthe less rapidly rotating stars (at least for the cooler stars),although the number of very rapid rotators is only three. The modifiedline-radiation driven wind model of Friend and Abbott, which takes intoaccount the finite size of the star as well as its rotation, predictsthat the terminal velocity should drop with increasing rotationalvelocity. However, when a smaller but very homogeneous subset of thedata is used (BO giants only), the correlation between terminal velocityand rotational velocity disappears.
| The upper main sequence of OB associations. II - The single-lined O stars: Spectral classification of northern stars and lines of C and N The properties of the stars close to the upper main sequence of OBassociations are studied in order to provide constraints on the theoryof evolution of massive stars. The spectral classification of northernsingle-lined O stars, most of them belonging to the associations CygOB1, Per OB1 and Cas OB6, is presented. The classification is performedaccording to Conti's classification scheme for O stars, amended byMathys (1988). The behavior of the C and N lines of the stars isstudied, in order to determine whether CNO-processed material is visibleat their surface. Three new ON stars have been discovered: BD + 36 deg4063 (O9.71), HD 13268 (O8V), and HD 110360 (O7V).
| The stellar winds of 203 Galactic O stars - A quantitative ultraviolet survey Measurements of the resonance lines of C IV, N V, and Si IV in a sampleof 203 O stars observed using IUE in a high-resolution mode arepresented. The data are discussed using a consistent set of radius,luminosity, and mass estimates. The ratio of the maximum observedvelocity and the terminal (farfield) velocity is found to average at 3.0for 131 stars with strong or saturated lines, and at 2.6 for all stars.An expression is given which is the best available predictor of O starmass loss rates, giving an accuracy better than a factor of twoirrespective of luminosity class. The ionization fractions C(3+)/C andN(4+)/N are found to be independent of stellar effective temperature,but increase by a factor of about two from main sequence stars tosupergiants. Two new possible ON stars are identified, and enhancedsurface nitrogen abundance is confimed in ON stars. Discrete narrowabsorption features are found to be virtually universal characteristicof O star P Cygni profiles.
| IUE-IRAS studies of the infrared cirrus The 60 and 100 micron cirrus emission around 256 lines of sight in theIRAS all-sky survey was measured, and the flux averages were used tostudy the distribution, variations, and correlations of the IRASinfrared cirrus fluxes with various interstellar parameters. It wasfound that the 60 and 100 micron fluxes correlate with the depletion ofSi and show a trend with the depletion of Fe for 51 lines of sighttoward the Galactic halo. No correlation was found with the abundancesof Si, Mn, Fe, S, or Zn or with abundance ratios for the full sample of256 stars. An abundance ratio of about 3 x 10 to the 7th by numberrelative to H was derived from 60 and 100 micron flux ratios and the Hcolumn along the line of sight; this ratio appears to decrease by afactor of 10 into the halo.
| 2000 A UV imaging of a 6 deg diameter field around the H and Chi Persei double cluster A stellar field centered close to the h and Chi per double cluster hasbeen observed at 2000 A by the stratospheric balloon-born telescope ofthe SCAP-2000 program. It is shown that the prevailing extinction lawproduces greater extinction at 1965 A than is predicted by the meanextinction law. The results suggest the presence of an H2 cloud in frontof h and Chi Per in the second absorbing layer and in the local arm. Agroup of hot stars centered at the same distance as the molecular cloudmay form an association of OB stars in the local arm.
| Galactic interstellar abundance surveys with IUE. III - Silicon, manganese, iron, sulfur, and zinc This paper continues a survey of intestellar densities, abundances, andcloud structure in the Galaxy using the IUE satellite. A statisticaldata set of 223 O3-B2.5 stars is constructed, including 53 stars in theGalactic halo. It is found that S II lines in B stars, of luminosityclasses IV and V, have possible contamination from stellar S II,particular for stars with v sin i less than 200 km/s. The meanlogarithmic depletions are -1.00, -1.19. -0.63, and -0.23 (Si, Mn,Fe,S,Zn). Depletions of Si, Mn, and Fe correlate with the mean hydrogendensity n-bar along the line of sight, with a turnover for n-bar greaterthan 1/cm. Sulfur depletions correlate with n-bar along the line ofsight. The slight Zn depletion correlation also appears to bestatistically insignificant. No correlation of depletion is found withthe physical density derived from H2 rotational states in 21 lines ofsight. Depletion variations in the disk are consistent with a Galacticabundance gradient or with enhanced mean depletions in the anticenterregion.
| Galactic interstellar abundance surveys with IUE. II - The equivalent widths and column densities This paper continues a survey of interstellar densities, abundances, andcloud structure in the Galaxy, using the International UltravioletExplorer (IUE) satellite. Equivalent widths of 18 ultraviolet resonancetransitions are presented and column densities for Si II, Mn II, Fe II,S II, and Zn II toward 261 early-type stars are derived. Theseequivalent widths and column densities agree within the stated errors ofearlier Copernicus, BUSS, or IUE surveys of Mn II, Fe II, S II, and ZnII for 45 stars in common. The column densities are derived fromsingle-component curves of growth with a common b-value based on that ofFe II and Si II.
| Properties of blue stragglers in young OB associations The properties of the blue stragglers (BS) belonging to the associationsSco OB1, Cyg OB1, Car OB1, Cen OB1, and Per OB1 as well as of the earlyO stars belonging to Cas OB6 are studied on the basis of an extensivesurvey of the literature. Eleven of the thirteen BS for which therelevant information exists show an enhanced atmospheric abundance of N,which is interpreted as supporting the view (Maeder, 1987) that BS areprobably quasi-homogeneously evolved stars where the products of the CNOcycle have become observable at the surface. The mechanism inducing theturbulent diffusion responsible for the homogeneization of the stellarinterior does not clearly appear from the existing data. Tidal forces inclose binaries may play a role in some cases, but except in the case ofPer OB1 there is no convincing evidence that single BS have abnormallylarge rotational velocities. Finally the scenario of quasi-homogeneousevolution of the BS is not in contradiction with the observed propertiesof their likely descendents, the Wolf-Rayet stars, which are present inthe associations under consideration. The results presented in thispaper point toward the need for more observational data.
| Multivariate statistical analysis of OB stars around H and Chi Persei A multivariate statistical analysis has been carried out on 49 OB starshaving radial velocities and distance moduli in a field around h and ChiPersei. A hierarchical cluster analysis, combined with discriminantanalysis, has revealed the probable presence of two groups: onebelonging to the Perseus spiral arm (mean distance 2100 pc), the otherlocated at a distance of 1150 pc. Comparison of the difference in meanradial velocities of the groups with the value predicted by the formulaof Oort also supports the result obtained.
| Evidences for a bifurcation in massive star evolution. The ON-blue stragglers The effects of rotationally induced mixing on the evolution of massivestars is examined. The mechanism considered results from baroclinicinstability due to differential rotation which produces two-dimensionalmeteorological-like turbulent motions; the mixing is produced by thesmall-scale three-dimensional tail of the turbulent spectrum. The modelsshow that, due to the high viscosity, the diffusion coefficient would besufficiently large to mix most massive stars during their MS lifetime.However, below some critical rotation velocity, diffusive mixing isefficiently prevented by the mu-gradient. Below critical rotiation, theevolution is essentially classical with unmodifed redwards tracks in theHR diagram. Above critical rotation, the evolutionary tracks go upwardsand bluewards, very close to those of fully homogeneous evolution.Comparisons with observations indicate that turbulent diffusion canaccount for the ON stars lying close to the zero-age sequence.
| Extinction curves and intrinsic colours in local and distant OB complexes The present investigation of extinctions in two different Galactic diskregions is based on stars of (B1 V) Sp/L class, and indicates that theshapes of extinction curves, and perhaps the total/selective absorptionratios, differ among young star complexes. In addition, a smalldifference is noted among the intrinsic energy distributions in B1 Vstars' spectra in the complexes studied. The two associations studiedare Sco-Ori and the Perseus arm.
| Catalog of O-B stars observed with Tokyo Meridian Circle A catalog of the O-B stars, selected from 'Blaauw-Parenago' list andRubin's catalog, has been compiled on the FK4 system by the observationsmade with Gautier 8-inch Meridian Circle at the Tokyo AstronomicalObservatory during the period, 1971 to 1979. It contains 1059 stars andwas compiled for the future establishment of high precision propermotions of O-B stars.
