Dynamical stability of the quadruple systems HD 68255/6/7 and HD 76644 We analyze the dynamical stability of the hierarchical quadruple systemsHD 68255/6/7 and HD 76644 via numerical integration of the equations ofmotion of the four-body problem, with a chainlike regularization ofclose stellar interactions. The observational errors were taken intoaccount using Monte Carlo simulations, assuming that they possessed aGaussian distribution. HD 68255/6/7 is probably stable, while HD 76644is unstable with a probability exceeding 0.97 and with a disruption timeof no more than 105 years. The influence of the observational errors andpossible scenarios for the formation of unstable multiple stars arediscussed.

Increased Multiplicity of 77 Cygni, V815 Herculis, and HD 140122 High-dispersion spectroscopic observations of 77 Cygni, V815 Herculis, and HD 140122 have resulted in the detection of at least one additionalcomponent in each system. The newly identified component of 77 Cyg has aperiod of 35.48 days. V815 Her is a triple system with periods of 1.810and 2300 days or 6.3 yr. The two visual binary components of HD 140122are short-period spectroscopic binaries with periods of 10.879 and15.770 days.

Kinematics of Hipparcos Visual Binaries. II. Stars with Ground-Based Orbital Solutions This paper continues kinematical investigations of the Hipparcos visualbinaries with known orbits. A sample, consisting of 804 binary systemswith orbital elements determined from ground-based observations, isselected. The mean relative error of their parallaxes is about 12% andthe mean relative error of proper motions is about 4%. However, even 41%of the sample stars lack radial velocity measurements. The computedGalactic velocity components and other kinematical parameters are usedto divide the stars with known radial velocities into kinematical agegroups. The majority (92%) of binaries from the sample are thin diskstars, 7.6% have thick disk kinematics and only two binaries have halokinematics. Among them, the long-period variable Mira Ceti has a verydiscordant {Hipparcos} and ground-based parallax values. From the wholesample, 60 stars are ascribed to the thick disk and halo population. There is an urgent need to increase the number of the identified halobinaries with known orbits and substantially improve the situation withradial velocity data for stars with known orbits.

Binary star speckle measurements during 1992-1997 from the SAO 6-m and 1-m telescopes in Zelenchuk We present the results of speckle interferometric measurements of binarystars made with the television photon-counting camera at the 6-m BigAzimuthal Telescope (BTA) and 1-m telescope of the Special AstrophysicalObservatory (SAO) between August 1992 and May 1997. The data contain 89observations of 62 star systems on the large telescope and 21 on thesmaller one. For the 6-m aperture 18 systems remained unresolved. Themeasured angular separation ranged from 39 mas, two times above the BTAdiffraction limit, to 1593 mas.

MSC - a catalogue of physical multiple stars The MSC catalogue contains data on 612 physical multiple stars ofmultiplicity 3 to 7 which are hierarchical with few exceptions. Orbitalperiods, angular separations and mass ratios are estimated for eachsub-system. Orbital elements are given when available. The catalogue canbe accessed through CDS (Strasbourg). Half of the systems are within 100pc from the Sun. The comparison of the periods of close and widesub-systems reveals that there is no preferred period ratio and allpossible combinations of periods are found. The distribution of thelogarithms of short periods is bimodal, probably due to observationalselection. In 82\% of triple stars the close sub-system is related tothe primary of a wide pair. However, the analysis of mass ratiodistribution gives some support to the idea that component masses areindependently selected from the Salpeter mass function. Orbits of wideand close sub-systems are not always coplanar, although thecorresponding orbital angular momentum vectors do show a weak tendencyof alignment. Some observational programs based on the MSC aresuggested. Tables 2 and 3 are only available in electronic form at theCDS via anonymous ftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/Abstract.html

Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue. We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star, when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

All-sky Stromgren photometry of speckle binary stars All-sky Stromgren photometric observations were obtained for 303 specklebinaries. Most stars were in the range of V = 5-8. These data, whencombined with ratios of intensities from the CHARA speckle photometryprogram, will allow the determination of photometric indices for theindividual components of binary stars with separations as small as 0.05arcsec. These photometric indices will complement the stellar massesfrom the speckle interferometry observations to provide a much improvedmass-luminosity relationship.

The Sirius supercluster in the FK5 Fifty-five stars in the FK5 or with PPM(H) quality proper motions arediscussed as members of the Sirius supercluster. The convergent point ofthe supercluster motion is (A, D) = (20.55h -38.1 deg) and the spacevelocity is V(T) = 18.6 + 0.005X km/s, where X is the radial distance ofthe members from the sun. The member stars indicate (Fe/H) Hyades -(Fe/H) Sirius = 0.18 dex from both photometric and spectroscopicevidence. The bulk of the supercluster members fall into two age groups,6.3 x 10 exp 8 and 10 exp 9 yr on the basis of models with convectiveovershoot. The available observations of chromospheric activity in Mg II(h and k) are quantized into three well-defined groups for both Siriussupercluster and Hyades cluster dwarfs. For 20 supercluster members withcluster parallax greater than 0.03 arcsec the ratio ofpi(cluster)/pi(trigonometric) = 0.95 +/- 0.20(sigma).

The period distribution of unevolved close binary systems Period distributions have been examined for various spectral types ofabout 600 (eclipsing and spectroscopic) close binaries, which are likelyto be substantially unevolved. The comparison with the previouscorresponding analyses of extensive (but heterogeneous) binary samplesallows a clarification of the extent of the evolutionary andobservational selection effects. Remarkably, this analysis reveals agreat deficiency of short period binaries (with periods corresponding tocase A mass transfer) in the whole spectral range. For the late spectraltypes, this result may be connected with postformation angular momentumloss caused by stellar wind magnetic braking; at least for the late Band A spectral range, a ready interpretation of this finding is thatclose binaries of corresponding periods and spectral types are rarelyformed.

Visual multiples. VII - MK classifications Classifications are given for 865 components of visual multiples; theyshow no systematic differences from the MK system, and the random errorsare one subclass in type and two-thirds of a luminosity class. It isfound that at least 1% of the F-type IV and V stars are weak-lined, 32%of the A4-F1 IV and V stars are Am, and 5% of the A0-A3 IV and V starsare early-type Am. Attention is called to the large fraction (55%) ofthe A3-A9 III-V stars that are of luminosity classes III or IV, unlikethe percentage (16%) at neighboring types.

The properties of close multiple stars A reexamination of the properties of close multiple systems isconducted, taking into account recent numerical, analytical, andobservational results. The orbital elements of 43 spectroscopic multiplesystems are presented in a table. Tables with photometry data of thesystems and data describing their properties are also provided.Attention is given to period ratios, mass ratios, orbital coplanarity, stability, lithium abundances and age estimates, and prospects of futureobservations. Numerical studies indicate that fragmentation producesbinary components with mass ratios usually close to 1.0, while fissionusually produces mass ratios in the range 0.1-0.5. Using analyticalstability criteria, all 27 close multiple systems considered are stableif they are corotating. If they are counter-rotating, four systems arepossibly unstable. However, other factors suggest that even these fourare probably stable. The solar-type close multiple systems ranged in agefrom 100 million years to 2,000 million years.

UBVRI photometry of 225 AM stars UBVRI photometry of 225 Am stars taken from Mendoza's (1974) catalog ispresented. The results are compared with those obtained by Feinstein(1974) for 21 of the stars and with the values of Johnson et al. (1966).It is assumed that in the first approximation the (V-I) color index ofan unreddened Am star is equal to that of a normal main-sequence star; astandard main sequence is defined for A and early F stars, and thefive-color photometry is analyzed by means of plots of U-V vs. V-I, B-Vvs. V-I, and V-R vs. V-I. Mean color deficiencies of Am stars areexamined, and it is suggested that an unreddened star located below themain-sequence A0-F2 line in the (V-I, U-V) plane is a photometric Amstar. It is concluded that: (1) photometric Am stars have colordeficiencies (as a function of V-I) which, on the average, are 0.07 magin (U-V) color index and 0.025 mag in (B-V) color index; (2) Am starswith V-R less than 0.25 mag may also have a color deficiency of about0.01 mag; (3) Am stars with V-R greater than 0.3 mag may have a colorexcess of approximately 0.01 mag; and (4) Am stars with V-R between 0.25and 0.3 mag may have normal colors.
