Constant-Velocity Stars at the North Galactic Pole Suitable for Use as Secondary Velocity Standards We present mean radial velocities for 143 stars in Selected Area 57 atthe north Galactic pole that are suitable for use as secondary velocitystandards. The stars were drawn from a magnitude-limited sample and aremostly fainter than 11th magnitude in V. They span a wide range ofeffective temperatures and surface gravities and thus provide a suitablesource of targets for observed templates. The mean radial velocities arebased on at least 10 observations spanning at least 8200 days, and areaccurate typically to 0.2 km s-1, with no obvious signs ofvariable velocity or composite spectra. Some of the results presented here used observations made with the MMT,a joint facility of the Smithsonian Institution and the University ofArizona.

Two-colour photometry for 9473 components of close Hipparcos double and multiple stars Using observations obtained with the Tycho instrument of the ESAHipparcos satellite, a two-colour photometry is produced for componentsof more than 7 000 Hipparcos double and multiple stars with angularseparations 0.1 to 2.5 arcsec. We publish 9473 components of 5173systems with separations above 0.3 arcsec. The majority of them did nothave Tycho photometry in the Hipparcos catalogue. The magnitudes arederived in the Tycho B_T and V_T passbands, similar to the Johnsonpassbands. Photometrically resolved components of the binaries withstatistically significant trigonometric parallaxes can be put on an HRdiagram, the majority of them for the first time. Based on observationsmade with the ESA Hipparcos satellite.

Vilnius Photometry of Stars in the Area of SA 57 Interstellar reddening, as a function of distance in the direction ofthe North Galactic Pole (SA 57), is determined using the two-dimensionalclassification of 63 stars observed in the Vilnius photometric system. The average value of A_V calculated for the stars up to 800 pc distanceis close to zero (the mean value is A_V=0.01 mag) with a standarddeviation of the order of sigma =+/- 0.1 mag. This dispersion of pointsis exactly what is expected from the errors of measurement andclassification.

A search for wide binaries at the north galactic pole using precise radial velocities Precise radial velocities are presented from a survey of 247 starscentered on Selected Area 57 at the North Galactic Pole, complete forlate-type stars with V magnitude brighter than 12.0. The radialvelocities have a typical precision of 0.2-0.3 km/s. New spectral typesand distances estimates are presented for 120 of the stars in thesample. All pairs of stars with angular separations between 1 and 600arcsec have been considered, and 11 candidate pairs found with velocitydifferences less than 1.5 km/s. It is estimated that 4 or 5 of the 11candidate pairs are actually bound binaries, but none with separationslarger than 0.1 pc. The constraints imposed by these results on theactual distribution of wide binaries in the Galaxy should now bereanalyzed. The unusual precision of the velocities led to the discoveryof a new cluster associated with the multiple system ADS 8811 ABC.

Observations of double stars and new pairs. XIV Results of a continuing survey of visual double stars are presented, including 4880 measurements made from February 1987 to November 1989.The positions in WDS format and Durchmusterung numbers are given for 194pairs first reported here. Micrometer measurements of 1142 doubles madewith the Swarthmore 61 cm refractor are presented. Magnitudes areestimated for some of the objects. Plate measurements, plateorientations, position angles, number of nights, and measured exposuresare given. Visual observations of 342 pairs obtained in May 1989 atCerro Tololo, mostly with the 1.0 m reflector, are reported.

Measurements of binary stars made at Nice Results are presented for 753 measurements of 267 binary stars that weremade with the 50- and 74-cm refractors at Nice Observatory. Coordinatesfor the equinox of 1950 are provided, along with apparent magnitudes, spectral types, and probable periods. It is noted that three-quarters ofthese systems are recently discovered close binaries.
